Church services

Services are now held in the church building every Sunday at 11 am. .  The seating is limited and there is mask wearing and hand sanitising but it’s been good to meet in person again, so please come.  Covid regulations allow no singing as yet but listening to recorded hymns and praise music has nevertheless been uplifting.   The services are still available live via Zoom thanks to Brian’s technical skills, so if you would like to join us on Zoom just let Brian know -  his phone number and  email address are shown above.

Bishop’s Harvest Appeal 2020

Each year at our harvest festival service we take an offering in support of the Bishop’s Appeal.

The Bishop describes this year’s appeal on the diocesan website as follows:

“The Harvest Appeal moves now to a new three year cycle and shifts focus. Over the next three years we will be working with the Mother’s Union and Christian Aid.  The two main projects* are outlined in the leaflet and I commend them to you. As in previous years ten per cent of your donation will also support three UK organisations who are working for a fairer and more sustainable world: Cumbria Development Education Centre, Carlisle One World Centre and Global Justice Now.

*This year’s projects are Christian Aid’s work in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and the work of the Mothers’ Union in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Due to Covid restrictions we cannot take up an offering in the church service so if you would like to give, please use the link below.

Church Finances

In last month’s bulletin we explained about the parish offering system.  Since then the PCC has put forward an offering to the diocese for 2021 of between £18,500  and £20,000 dependent on circumstances.

The option of online giving was also mentioned last month and anyone can now support the Church and churchyard using the following links:

Mungrisdale Church Annual Meeting

This was postponed in March due to the Covid 19 outbreak, and will now be held via Zoom on

Thursday 8th October at 7pm.    Everyone on the electoral roll is eligible to attend so please join in by letting Brian know and he will send you a Zoom invitation.

Boon Day

On Friday 9th October we are holding a Boon day to tidy up the churchyard and cut back some of the bushes.  If the day is wet we will reschedule,  otherwise we’ll start at 10am.  Come along any time that morning – just half an hour can make a big difference..

OTHER LOCAL NEWS & NOTICES

Mungrisdale WI

On Monday 10th August the WI met in “Lorraine’s Tea Garden” and were served with a delicious afternoon tea.  It was a beautiful warm sunny day and all members bar two were able to make it.

Everyone had a very pleasant afternoon catching up with each other again after such a long break. “

Mungrisdale Village Hall:

Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE) and the more local support network, Action with Communities in Cumbria (ACT) have waded through government legislation, rules and regs and provided very helpful framework documents to help inform decision making. As a consequence, the Trustees and Management Committee have worked hard to ensure that when the hall reopens on Tuesday, 1st September it will be as Covid-19 secure as possible.

A term springs to mind 'the new normal' which highlights a way of thinking and serves as a reminder for us to get out and about again but to also remember all those mantras of keeping safe. When in the hall there are plenty of hand sanitising stations and the furniture to recommended social distancing guidelines. Face masks are now a de rigueur fashion accessory.

Following ACT's advice the hall has been set out to accommodate 9 (nine) in the Meeting Room and 25 (twenty-five) in the Main Hall. We want to reassure everyone that the tables and chairs will have been well  cleaned before each booking. However, the downside to maintaining biosecurity is that the only facility available in the kitchen will be the hot water boiler. It was a difficult decision to place everything else out of bounds but you can still make refreshments - you just need to bring everything with you - including your own tea towel to dry up!  It feels inhospitable but for the moment, and until we see how the next few months play out, this will be the likely situation until at least the end of the year.

So, a warm welcome back to the Monday morning Art Group who return from 7 September; the Parish Council whose next meeting will be in the Main Hall on Monday, 14 September; the weekly Yoga classes starting again from Wednesday, 16 September and the Eden Valley Guild of Spinners and Weavers who return for their monthly session on Saturday, 19 September.

Bookings can be made either by email - anne.manger@btinternet.com or phone - 01768 484435.

Caldbeck Surgery Flu vaccination 2020

This year the Flu vaccination programme needs to be run differently to previous years. We can’t rely on vaccinating people when they happen to be in the surgery for another matter, and we don’t have space for safe queueing on our site. We’ve decided that to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, we need to run our flu clinics off-site were we can have queues under cover and socially-distanced.

We normally vaccinate the over 65s and those who have a condition that puts them more at-risk from flu; this year we also have those who have been officially advised to shield due to Covid-19, and the prospect (not yet confirmed by the NHS) of adding the 50-64 year olds to those eligible.

Our plan is to run flu-specific clinics at Caldbeck village hall, spread over 6 weeks (since our vaccine is delivered in tranches over this period). We will prioritise as follows:

1.     Those who are officially shielding ie have received a shielding advice letter from NHS England, including their household-members who are on the ‘at-risk’ list

2.     Those who are at-risk and those who are over 65 (the normal flu groups)

3.     (Those who are 50-64, should this cohort become included)

You will receive either an SMS text or a letter inviting you to a specific date and either an AM or a PM clinic, please attend at this time and date if at all possible. The dates that the clinics will be running are shown below, if you are unable to attend at your designated time please ring us to arrange an alternative date, *after the date you were invited*.Please be aware you may need to wait longer. (if you attend earlier we may not have enough vaccine and will have to turn you away)

In particular, if you have not been officially advised to shield, *do not attend on the shielding days*. Keeping this group of patients separate from others is of vital importance to their safety.

Please do not attend if you have not received a letter or SMS text invite. If you believe you are in an eligible group and have not been invited by 30th September please call us. We have just enough vaccine to cover our priority populations as above (pending NHS vaccine supply for the 50-64s), and we will not be able to vaccinate anyone who is ineligible (and who would therefore pay for vaccination) until we are certain that the priority groups have all been vaccinated.

Flu clinics will run from 09:00-12:00 and 14:00 – 17:00 on each day. Hall access will be closed outside these times.  Please note that we will be using the hall side doors for entry & exit only, as the front steps aren’t suitable for limited-mobility access. To preserve safe queueing and social distance, all entry will be via the right hand door, and all exit via the left-hand door.

Clinic dates for 50-64 year-olds will be provided in due course once we have NHS confirmation of eligibility and additional vaccine stock has been provided.

Northern Fells Excess Apple Scheme

Sadly we have had to take the decision not to run the scheme this year.  This is not because we would not have had plenty of apples donated,  as it is probably going to be a bumper fruit year, but it was thought we would have had a problem selling the juice as so many of the events at which we usually sold it are not now taking place.

We are sorry to disappoint our many loyal customers but having none this year will hopefully encourage you all to buy twice as much next year to make up for what you are missing this autumn.
