Richard Nankivell

Richard Nankivell was the first guest speaker of the Mungrisdale Women's Institute, since they resumed their monthly meetings in the new Village Hall. The title of Richard's talk was "30 years in Broadcasting", and he entertained  over 30 members and their guests with an amusing and informative account of his life in, and travels with, the broadcasting service.

He comes from a Cornish family of Estate Agents and Auctioneers, and was actually in the process of showing a retired Colonel around a property, when the Colonel informed him that he had "the gift of the gab", and was just the sort of person who would be ideal in broadcasting for the Forces Overseas programme, and thus a new career was born.

He broadcast from Germany; Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands and Iraq, during the first Gulf War." in this capacity and, after taking voluntary redundancy, secured a place with BBC  Radio Cumbria, intending to stay there for only 3/ 4 years, but over 10 years later is still there! He obviously doesn't mind the early start of 4.30 am to his  working day!

Mrs. Eleanor Earl conducted the meeting, and the vote of thanks was given by Miss Dorothy Chalk.

The competition was for the oldest newspaper cutting.
