MUNGRISDALE  SWALEDALE SHEEP SHOW

Each year, on the 3rd Wednesday in May, the Annual Mungrisdale Swaledale Sheep Show is held in a small field in front of Bannerdale View (Opposite the red Telephone Box near the bridge to The Mill Inn).

Sheep Shows have been a traditional part of Lakeland life for generations and the Mungrisdale Show is no exception.  The 2009 Show will be held on the 20th May commencing at 1pm and will be the 79th.  Bearing in mind the the event has not been continuous for a number of reasons (it was interupted, for example, during the war years and after Foot and Mouth outbreaks.

Being usually the first Show of the season and with prize money in excess of £800, it attracts farmers with their Swaledale sheep and lambs from a wide area of CVumbria, stretching from Appleby in the East, beyond Keswick in the West,, and down to Kendal in the South of the County.  The first seven Classes in the Show are for "local" exhibitors who live within a 12 mile radius of Mungrisdale and the remaining 18 Classes are open to everyone.

This is not an event with "added visitor attractions"  (apart from tea, coffee, sandwiches and excellent home-made cakes) but if you would like to see a traditional local sheep show in a wonderful Lakeland setting and perhaps "have a crack"with one or two exhibitors to learn a bit more about about this hardy breed (that's the farmers as well as the Swaledales) you will be very welcome.  Needless to say, admission is free !
